Open House is February 15, 2018
**5:15 pm - 7:30 pm**

PARENTS AND STUDENTS:

Open House: Golden West cordially invites parents, students and members of the community to our Open House Night, February 15, 2018 in the GWHS Gym at 6:00pm.  Please join us for the Pre-Open House meetings at 5:15pm.  We will have presentations from the GW Academies, COS, and there will also be a sophomore parent meeting with the counselors.  Parents will have the opportunity to interact with their students' teachers during the Meet and Greet session. We hope to see you take part of this excellent opportunity for the entire Golden West community to come together and discover the exciting programs offered on our campus. PTA will be selling tacos for $1.50 ea. There will also be cookies and bottled water for $1. (Cash only).

Students:  Students please remember it is unlawful to park backwards in parking places and drive the wrong direction through the parking lot.  All laws of the roads apply in the GWHS parking lot.  Violators can be cited.  Please slow-down in the parking lot and follow all directional arrows appropriately.  Thank you

Golden West FFA's Annual Kiss a Cow event begins Wednesday, January 31! Fill the jar of the teacher you would most like to see kiss a cow. Jars will be in teachers' rooms until Wednesday, February 21. The top 3 teachers will kiss a cow Friday, February 23 at lunch on the hill. All proceeds collected will go to help the Visalia Police Department's K-9 unit. Let's help get the police department a new dog!

Please be aware that we will start with Tardy Sweeps immediately.  In order to avoid after school detention due to being caught in a tardy sweep please make sure that you are in your classroom prior to the tardy bell ringing.

SENIORS:
SENIORS!!! Grad Nite tickets are still available and may be purchased at the finance office.  Tickets are $190; cash or checks made payable to Golden West High School. Permission slips are available in front of the finance office and both sides must be completed, including medical info and parent signature! Bring your student ID, completed permission slip, and money to purchase a ticket.  Buses 1, 3 and 6 are available.


ATTEN SENIORS: The Visalia Education Foundation Scholarship Application is now available. The Foundation awards over $50,000 in scholarships to Visalia Unified School District High School seniors each year. By filling out this one application you may qualify for up to 22 different scholarships. See the Golden West Scholarship web page for more information and to apply.  Applications are due to Visalia Unified District Office by 5 p.m., Friday March 9, 2018.

ATTN SENIORS - SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES about to EXPIRE:

Iva Korsgaden Memorial Scholarship Fund will award two GWHS (one female/ one male) students a $500 scholarship each.  Students can apply by writing a one-page essay on volunteer activity/community service involvement and submitting it to Mrs. McIntosh in the Counseling Office.  Essays must be typed and are due by 3:30 p.m. on February 16, 2018.



Tulare County School Board Association will award a $350 scholarship to a deserving high school senior. Applicants must meet the following criteria: cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher, good citizenship, participation in extracurricular activities, community involvement, and enroll in an accredited institution in fall 2018. Applicants must submit a one-page statement describing educational and career goals, a student activity sheet and an official sealed transcript with the application.  The application must be typewritten or printed in black ink. All application forms must be submitted to Mrs. Waters or Mrs. McIntosh in the counseling dept. By February 16, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. To complete the application please visit the Golden West Scholarship webpage.

Visalia Optimist Oratorical Contest will award up to $22,500 an is encouraging area students to speak their minds about the topic "Where Are My Roots of Optimism?" as part of the Optimist International Oratorical Contest for 2017-18 school year. The contest is open to students under the age of 18 as of October 1, 2017. For further details and to apply please visit the Golden West Scholarship webpage. Due date is February 23, 2018.

Counseling Dept:

ATTN SOPHOMORE BOYS:  At this time of year Scicon is permitting you to be camp counselors with your counselor approval.  You must have grades of C or better, good attendance and no discipline issues.  Please see Mrs. McIntosh in the counseling office to sign up.

Attention Junior Males: If you are interested in history and politics, you might be interested in attending Boys State. American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for U.S. high school students. A participatory program in which students become part of the operation of local, county and state government. At Boys State, participants learn the rights, privileges and responsibilities of franchised citizens. The training is objective and centers on the structure of city, county and state governments. Operated by students elected to various offices, Boys State activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law-enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, choruses and recreational programs. If Boys State seems interesting to you, please see Mrs. Costa in the counseling office for further information.
ATTN Juniors & Seniors:  If you are looking for work, Employment Connections Job listing is available weekly to view in the Counseling Dept. Presentation Binder or in the Library.
AP students and parents: Please refer to the AP documents for information regarding the fees, dates, and deadlines for 2017 AP exams. https://www.vusd.org/Page/12318 You may also obtain forms for Fee Waivers and/or your one free AP exam provided by VUSD.  We also accept payments via credit card online at the GW webstore!  (http://webstores.activenetwork.com/school-software/golden_west_high_sch/).  March 2nd is the absolute last day to pay for AP Exams!

Athletics:

Track:  Track season has begun. Practice is at 3:40 pm. You do not want to miss a chance to be the one to receive an offer from a major college.  Come out and join GW Nation 2018 Track/Field and get the training you need to be recruited. All student athletes welcomed from all sports. Sign-ups are until 2/15/18. Hope to see you all out there! ~Head Coach George Steward & Staff.

Baseball: Baseball season has begun. Throwing and conditioning begins at 3:40PM on the varsity field every day. Attendance is mandatory.


Clubs:

Ablaze Club: We will meet this Thursday, 2/15 in room E-9 during lunch.

Blazer Buddies meet every Wednesday during lunch in P-4. New members are welcome!

Anime Club: We will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunch. Join up in S-1.

GSA Club: GSA club meets every Thursday during lunch in A-9. New members always welcome!

XL Program:

XL has Afterschool Intervention available on Wednesday's and Thursdays in E-10 from 3:30-4PM for students who have detention that needs to be served.

Does helping others and your community appeal to you? Some of our activities include hospital visits to visit sick children, feeding the homeless at local shelters, cleaning up Visalia by gathering trash around downtown and removing graffiti. We even have fun field trips planned for Quantum Leap and Clay Cafe. We want to create mentors for the incoming middle schoolers by joining in and hanging out with them as friends and peers. If you think you would be interested in any of the activities listed then please visit the XL program in room E- 10 to learn more about our Youth Council.

It's coming this spring!!! Mr. Rodgers will once again be offering his EMS/Health Careers XL Class!  Start date is March 1st, so plan ahead as this class fills quickly...field trips and guest speakers!!!  Check out the tentative schedule at:  http://bit.ly/emss2018
