"It's Cool to Go to School III"

Ø  The high school attendance incentive program-"It's Cool to Go to School"-is back!  Any student with PERFECT attendance this year is automatically entered into the drawing for a new Nissan Versa, courtesy of the Groppetti Automotive Family.  There are two ways to achieve PERFECT attendance this year; please visit your Attendance Office for contest rules.

1. If you turned in an ASB application for next year's class- interviews will take place on May 10 and 11th after school. Come to K5 to sign up for a time.



2. Clubs please get your Farewell Assembly changing of the guard narratives emailed to Ms. Shipley no later Thursday May 11th.





3. Prom tickets will be on sale in the finance office. Tickets are sold individually and are $25 with an ASB sticker, $35 without and 45$ at the door.



4. Attention Juniors and Seniors: If you are interested in being an elementary aide, academic tutor, counseling or office aide please come by the Counseling office and pick up an application from Mrs. Herrera. Application deadline will be May 19th at 3:30 pm. If you should have any questions come by the Counseling office before school or during lunch time and speak with Mrs. Hernandez, Mrs. Cantu or Mrs. Herrera.

5.  Attention ALL MW Athletes!  If you plan on participating in any sport next school year, NOW is the time to register for the SPORT PHYSICAL CLINIC on Thursday, May 18th in the MW Gym.   You can pick up forms in the Nurse's Office or Attendance Office.  Please return the completed forms and $2.00 to the Nurse by Friday May 12th.  No late registrations will be taken.



6. Senior Grams on sale now until May 11!  Tell your favorite Seniors, "Congratulations.  I'll miss you.  Love you forever!"  Purchase your grams for $2 each in the Quad at lunch.  The souvenir Grams will be delivered on Friday May 12.



7. CSF members:  please stop by room I-9 to vote for next year's officers.  You will earn a service point for your vote. Voting will be available through May 23rd.



8. GREAT NEWS! Jostens printed some extra yearbooks for us as our original order SOLD OUT! That means we will have approx. 50 more yearbooks available for sale. They can be purchased in Room B-201 on Oak Day, May 19th, starting at 3:30pm. $90, CASH ONLY, First come, first served. This is it, no additional books can be ordered.

SPORTS BULLETIN

Congratulations to the following track athletes who had great performances at the WYL Championships last Thursday.  For the girls, Lacey Clark is the WYL Champion in the Pole Vault and 2nd in the Long Jump, Rebekah Campos 2nd in 800m, Hannah Ellis 3rd in the 1600m, Abbi Eickelberg 3rd in 300m hurdles, Tianna Gibbs, Lacey Clark, Kassandra Sanchez and Eickelberg 2nd in the 4x100m relay, Keila Ramirez, Ellis, Campos, and Eickelberg 3rd in the 4x400m relay, and Jade Whitfield 2nd in Discus and 3rd in Shotput. For the boys, Chris Bailey is the WYL Champion in the Discus and the Shot Put, Gearrod Clements 2nd in the Discus, and Jacob Ryals 3rd in the 300m hurdles.  Next up is the Central Area Championships in Sanger tomorrow, May 10.



Staff and students, please come out and support the Mt. Whitney varsity baseball team as they take on Redwood at 7:00pm on Wednesday, May 10.  The Pioneers are looking to keep their winning streak against the Rangers and earn a top seed in the Div. 2 playoffs.



Attention ALL MW Athletes!  If you plan on participating in any sport next school year, NOW is the time to register for the SPORT PHYSICAL CLINIC on Thursday, May 18th in the MW Gym. Anyone interested in Cross Country, there will be a meeting after school today, May 9 in the PE Classroom.



Anyone interested in water polo, there will be a meeting tonight, May 9 in the PE Classroom at 6:00pm.



Attention all returning girls tennis players and those girls interested in playing tennis this fall.  There will be a mandatory meeting at lunch on Thursday, May 11th in the PE classroom.  Food will be provided.  We will discuss practice, summer schedule and other important information.



The boys tennis awards banquet is Tuesday, May 9 at 6pm.  Varsity bring pizza and JV bring a dessert.   The swim and dive awards banquet is on Thursday, May 18. The softball awards banquet is on Friday, March 19 at 6pm.  All banquets will be in the MW Cafeteria.



Anyone interested in playing girls basketball, please come by I-7 before the end of the school year to pick up a summer practice schedule. Coach Lopez.



Teachers, there are no early outs for today.  For Wednesday, May 10, please excuse the track team at 1:15, the bus will leave at 1:30 for Sanger, the softball team at 2:30, the bus will leave for Hanford at 2:45, the Frosh baseball team at 2:45 for home game vs. Redwood, and the JV baseball team at 2:45, you are on your own to Redwood.  There will be no early outs for varsity baseball, game time is 7:00pm vs. Redwood.  Thank you and good luck to all our student-athletes.

It's Audition Time for Speeches at MWHS Commencement 2017



There will be two speech opportunities at this year's Commencement Ceremony:

#1- the Welcome Speech--a pre-written speech in English AND Spanish; and

#2- the Senior Speech-written by the applicant.



#1-The Welcome Speech will be a pre-written speech.  We need someone to read the English version AND someone to read the Spanish version.  When you sign up, you will be given a copy of the speech to practice.

#2-The Senior Speech will be written by the applicant.



Auditions will be held on Thursday, May 11th, after school in Mrs. Oto's classroom, B25.  You may sign up with Mrs. Eickelberg beginning Monday, May 1st.  You may choose to audition for all speeches OR just one.

California Citrus Mutual's Scholarship Foundation

Deadline: 05/19/2017

Amount: $1,000

Criteria:

1.       Graduating high school senior

2.       Parent/guardian of student is employed by a CCM member

3.       Proof of college/trade school registration is required prior to presentation of award

4.       Submit application and required written responses by May 19,2017.

Application Process: Please pick up application in the counseling office with Ms. Herrera.



B. Davis Scholarship

Deadline: 05/22/2017

Amount: Up to $1,000

Criteria:

Applicants are open to all juniors and seniors. You must write an essay of less than 1,000. Please visit their website to review the essay prompt and submission process.

Deadline: 05/31/2017 @ 11:59pm ET

Amount: $100,000 in scholarships to 40 individuals

Criteria:

The Wagner-Verduzco Pre-Medical Scholarship

Amount: $300-$600

Criteria and Application Process:

This is a scholarship that will be dispersed to one female and one male Visalia high school senior or alumni in the amount of $300.00 each. Or one $600 scholarship if there is only a single applicant. The scholarship is awarded by Dr. Esteban Verduzco and his wife Caty. He is a graduate of Mt. Whitney high school c/o 2000 and alumni of UC Davis Medical school and Yale Internal Medicine Residency. Preference will be given to pre-medical students of a low-income background or those with a pledge to return to Tulare Co. to practice, interest in Latino or Native American health issues, or other marginalized groups. The deadline is June 1, 2017.
