COMMUNITY PARTNER RECOGNITION

The Board of Education and VUSD recognized the Staples Foundation and General Manager of Stapes, Visalia Branch Mr. Khalid Mohsin as outstanding Partners in Education.  Three years ago when Visalia Unified began implementing Linked Learning Academies, we sought industry partners to help organize and participate in industry advisory committees. These committees support pathways and academies by  reviewing curriculum, assisting with projects, recommending appropriate equipment and assisting with work-based learning activities. Mr. Mohsin was one of the first community partners to step up and help with our Computer Science and Business advisory committees. Mr. Mohsin has been a  dedicated partner, assisting with multiple projects. Mr. Mohsin was a great supporter of the BE FUTURE READY Conference,  assisting with the printing of materials and acting as an Industry Panelist. This past fall, Mr. Mohsin nominated Visalia Unified School District, and more  specifically, our Visalia Unified Futures Project program for the 2 Million and Change philanthropic initiative sponsored by Staples. The Visalia Unified  Futures Project is an initiative to support and promote work-based learning activities for students in Visalia. With Mr. Mohsins support, the Visalia  Unified Futures Project was awarded $3,500 for scholarships to be presented to students completing work-based internships this summer.

On behalf  of  the Board of Trustees and the students and staff of Visalia Unified, we would like to thank Mr. Mohsin for his outstanding support and Staples for  their generous donation to the Visalia Unified Futures Project.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION SUPPORTS (PBIS) BANNER RECOGNITION

Five VUSD schools were recognized for their achievement in effective implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention Systems (PBIS).  PBIS is a systematic approach to school discipline that provides for reinforcement of expectations and interventions for students in need of support.  School teams have been working over a period of 3 years to develop both proactive and intervention services for students in need of behavior support.  The structure is a 3 Tiered model of support.  Tier 1 is for all students, Tier 2 is for some students in need of additional help, and Tier 3 for more intensive services.  All schools were required to meet both behavior and academic goals over the course of the year.

Silver-  (Recognition for Tier 1-2 implementation)  Divisadero Middle School, Four Creeks Elementary School, Green Acres Middle School, and Valley Oak Middle School
Bronze- (Recognition for Tier 1 implementation)  Mineral King Elementary School
